Bone Augmentation
When an implant needs to be placed and not enough bone is present in the jaw, many options are available to grown bone . The source of bone that Dr Monshizadeh uses include:
- Bone augmentation using synthetic, xenogenous, allogenous materials
- Bone augmentation using oral autogenous bone (block, particulated)
& the choice is dependent on the specific need of each case. Many techniques are used to grow bone in the vertical and horizontal dimension to reconstruct very little or huge defects that will later serve as the foundation for implants.
Autogenous bone is the gold standard for large defects and is usually harvested from the ramus of the jaw, maxillary tuberosities and in some instances the chin. In severe cases, a multidisciplinary approach is used and bone is harvested from the hip.
Below is a very simple example of a young lady who was referred to Dr Monshizadeh who was missing her front left central incisor and a simple bone augmentation procedure needed to be performed.
Only 2.5 mm width of bone was present in the area initially
Area is prepared to receive the new donor bone
Bone was removed from the ramus of the jaw using a piezo unit
The small amount of bone is slowly removed and reshaped further to be relocated to the new area
The bone is fixed in the new position
Smaller autogenouse particulate material is further added to shape the new site
This is the site 3 months after the surgery with the ausgmented area
Final result after implant placement
